Imagine diving into the crystal-clear waters of Baja California and coming face-to-face with the largest fish in the world! Swimming with whale sharks through “Cabo Adventures” in Los Cabos is an adventure that blends adrenaline, wonder, and a unique connection with nature—or so they say.
The Adventure Begins...
My journey started at 5:50 a.m. when a van picked me up from my hotel. Upon arriving at the facilities, I met Mario, my guide for this adventure. Mario explained the boat rules, logistics, and how to interact with these magnificent animals. From the very beginning, I was beyond excited.
The guides at “Cabo Adventures” are known for their professionalism and enthusiasm. Mario and Alex, in particular, stood out for making us feel safe and confident. Along the way, they lightened the mood with jokes and words of encouragement. However, they’re also firm when needed—Mario reminded us that the shark’s skin is extremely sensitive, so touching them is strictly prohibited. The activity is carefully regulated and monitored by the coast guard and the navy. It’s worth noting that the drive from the “Cabo Adventures” facilities to La Paz takes about two hours.
Encountering the Giant of the Sea
When we arrived at the port, we were given “wetsuits” and divided into groups of four or five. Once in the water, the search for whale sharks began. The majesty of these animals is truly awe-inspiring. Despite their enormous size, they move with remarkable grace. They seem accustomed to human presence, allowing for a safe and up-close encounter.
While swimming, you can watch these giants filter plankton, feed, swim, or rest. Some participants described the experience as “unique and wonderful.” For me, the only fitting word is simply “INCREDIBLE.”
More Than Just Swimming
The adventure doesn’t end in the water. “Cabo Adventures” ensures the entire experience is memorable, including delicious food and moments to bond with others. I personally enjoyed tacos and hibiscus water, which were included in the package. If you’re craving something else, the port restaurant offers a varied menu to suit all tastes.
Important Considerations
Although excursions are designed to maximize the chances of sightings, encounters with whale sharks are not guaranteed. These animals are unpredictable, and factors such as weather and daily conditions play a role. Additionally, participants must be at least 8 years old and able to swim unassisted. Having a guide with you can make it harder to keep up with the shark, and if it swims faster than you, you might miss the moment.
Adventurers’ Reviews
After doing some research, I found that most reviews are positive. Participants praised the professionalism of the guides and the organization of the excursion. However, some mentioned that the guides can be strict in the water (they might yell or grab your arm), but this is to ensure the best chance of sightings for everyone. Once the tour is over, they usually explain or apologize for their actions. The guides are fluent in both Spanish and English, making it easy for visitors from different countries to feel comfortable.
Plan Your Adventure
If you’re thinking about joining this experience, the ideal season to swim with whale sharks in Los Cabos is from mid-October to April. I went in December, and during these months, the waters of Baja California become a temporary home for these magnificent creatures, offering a unique opportunity for nature and adventure enthusiasts.
